My
name is Jouni Luiro and I was born 1965 in Savukoski. It’s a small
village in northern Finland. Fishing has always been important part
of my life. In the good old days I spent most of my time
fishing during spring, summer and autumn. Now it’s enough if I can
go fishing some times during the season. Most I love it when you it
is time to gather a round the camp fire and making some coffee
and telling the true stories of
the big fish that did get away. The day will come when I can share
those experiences and pass on the tradition to my four children.

My
first fishing trip
I
remember like it was yesterday. We went fishing with my grandfather
fore the first time. It
was a July evening; we walked through the meadow down to the river.
In the meadow it I could feel the odour of just dejected hay.Grandfather had his fishing pole and I had an ice pole fishing with
me. I walked proudly alone side with him to the boat. When we
reached the boat he told me to go in the boat. I went to the back of
the boat and sat down. I was scared and in eager expectation. I hold
on hard to the boat. Grandfather pushed the boat in to the Kemi-river
and he jumps in the boat and sat down. He started to row,
When we reached the middle of the river he threw the lure into the
river. He
said that I should release my lure also. When I started to
release my lure I Looked in to the water. I saw in the pure water the lure reach
deeper and deeper in to the river. I became anxiety and fascinated
of what I saw.
This happened nearly four decades ago. I was only 3-4 years old
then. I
still get the fascinated feeling when I walk to the river.
When I grow older I started to angling with worm, and when I was
around 10 years old I got my first fishing reel, it was an Abumatic 220 The reel worked well for one summer and the next summer my dad
purchased a new Abumatic 220.
And that was the case every summer until I was old enough to get a
summer job. I fished mainly fore grayling and pike In those
days. I fished for pike with spinner until I was around 20
years old.

Me
back in 1971 my twins sons in summer 2005
whit
my first grayling and the boys whit there first...
Fly fishing
Somewhere in the 70's/80's my uncle went to a fly tying course. He
teaches me to tie flies and that’s where it started.
And
I’m passing on the skit to my kids..

It
well takes some more practice. But there well get there…

Around mid 80's rainbow trout was planted in to a lake nearby and I
started to fish with a fly rod. In the begging of my fly fishing
career I fished only for rainbow and grayling. In the beginning of
the 90s I tried to fish for salmon. And at the same time I tied my
first salmon fly. It took me the whole 90s to master fly fishing for
salmon and I have still lots to learn.
The last season I have started to fish for pike with fly rod.
Now I fish for grayling only in the autumn, because when we talk
about grayling it is a "must" to catch it with dry flies.
The most of the season I fish for salmon. I fish for Pike in the
early spring and in late autumn.
